In March, the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) launched a new policy for matching kidney transplant candidates with organs from deceased donors. Donated kidneys are now offered first to candidates listed at transplant hospitals within 250 nautical miles of the donor hospital. A kidney that is not accepted for any of these candidates will then be offered to candidates beyond the 250 nautical mile distance.
An estimated 3 million individuals in the U.S. live with a condition called atrial fibrillation, or AFib, with some estimates projecting that number being closer to 6 million when taking unknown and undiagnosed cases into account.
Interstitial lung disease or diffuse parenchymal lung disease comprises a large group of more than 150 heterogeneous disorders. As a result, patients with these disorders are a difficult group to treat because many of the therapies are individualized to each patient. The obesity epidemic in the United States continues to grow. Estimates are that currently 70 percent of the U.S. population is either overweight or obese. In 2013, the American Medical Association recognized obesity as a disease defined as chronic, relapsing, multifactorial and neurobehavioral where an increase in body fat promotes tissue dysfunction and abnormal physical stress to the body because of fat mass.
Liver disease is the eighth leading cause of death in the United States and the third or fourth leading cause of death among patients 45 to 64. To improve these outcomes, many hepatologists on the medical staffs of Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas and Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center – Fort Worth are undertaking a number of notable patient-centered research projects.
