In the medical history books, seeing the name of Baylor University Medical Center, part of Baylor Scott & White Health, is not at all uncommon. From establishing the first health insurance plan during the Depression to performing many ‘firsts’ (most recently the first baby in the U.S. born to a uterine transplant patient), Baylor Dallas’ place in healthcare history is well-known.
As specialties go, radiology doesn’t seem particularly suited to medical mission work in the developing world. However, the mission-driven approach of Mark Fulmer, MD, Diagnostic Radiology alum (1988), has not only taken him into the top leadership role with one of North Texas’ premier radiology practices, but around the globe to help others.
Over the past several years, focused research efforts have led to innovative surgical and transcatheter treatment options for aortic and mitral valve diseases. Now, these same efforts are on the rise in another area – the tricuspid valve – with the hope of achieving similar advantages and outcomes for patients.
Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano is one of a few centers in the region currently offering fenestrated stent grafts for endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. When there is not enough room between the renal arteries and the AAA for a standard endovascular graft to function properly, a fenestrated stent graft may provide another option.
