Combating the opioid epidemic
For the past few decades, opioids have been prescribed as a standard treatment for all types of pain. Today, heavy opioid prescribing has resulted in an alarming increase in opioid dependency and accidental overdose. In the face of this growing health crisis, the time has come for the medical community to take a closer look at our approach to pain management.
Clinical leadership at Baylor Scott & White Health is committed to equipping our physicians, and the medical community at large, with the knowledge and tools necessary to provide safer, more effective methods of pain management. With patient safety in mind, the below guidelines and video are provided as an educational resource on current best practices in treating chronic and acute pain. Our hope is that providers will share common understanding, patients will hear a consistent message, and the community at large will support these efforts.
