    Program Updates

Below are some of the latest updates from various Baylor University Medical Center, part of Baylor Scott & White Health, Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs over the last several months.

Dermatology

  • Alan Menter, MD, is the guest editor on the August 2018 “Best of psoriasis” edition of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
  • Dr. Alan Menter is a recipient of the 2017-2018 Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is conferred based on career longevity, philanthropic endeavors and lasting contributions to society. Out of 1.5 million biographies, only nine were selected for the Lifetime Achievement Award.


Internal Medicine

The Annual North Texas ACP Clinical Vignette Competition was held at UT Southwestern with Baylor University Medical Center residents earning some of the top honors:

  • Best Poster: “Leprosy: A simple distraction or the main attraction” – Danielle Ivey, MD, and Brooke Mills, MD
  • Best Oral: “A rare cause of intractable nausea and vomiting (Devic’s Disease)” – Dr. Brooke Mills

The oral presentation of PGY-2 resident Connor Griffin, MD, has been accepted for the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease Annual Liver Meeting in San Francisco. He is the presenting first author of the presentation Bariatric Surgery Is Associated with Increased Mortality in Compensated and Decompensated Cirrhosis: A Population-Based Study.

OB/GYN

Faculty member Wayne Inzer, MD, recently published “Effect of delayed cord clamping on very preterm twins”in the journal Early Human Development. Meanwhile, residentRobert Gladney, MD, had the October “Patient Safety Catch of the Month” for the medical center after discovering and reporting an error in gestational age calculation for some patients in the electronic health record.

Orthopedics

  • David Vier, MD, (along with Drs. Jaffe and Royer) published “Unipolar Allograft Reconstruction for Post-Traumatic Avascular Necrosis of the Distal Tibia: A Review of the Literature, Technique, and Case Series” in Foot & Ankle Surgery April 2018.
  • Jimmy Rizkalla, MD, PGY-2 resident, was awarded a scholarship to attend the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) annual meeting in Boston.
  • David Vier, MD, PGY-4, was asked to present at AOFAS.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

  • Rita Hamilton, DO, et. al. published “Sacral examination in spinal cord injury: Is it really needed?” in the Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine.
  • The manuscript of Sonesh Patel, MD, “Examining the Relationship between Obesity and Mental Health Outcomes Among Individuals Admitted to a Level 1 Trauma Center” (completed during residency) was accepted for publication in Clinical Obesity.

Surgery

The 14th Annual Department of Surgery Residents Research Day program was held at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple. Baylor University Medical Center residents participated by addressing a number of clinically relevant topics.

Baylor University Medical Center Medical Staff Featured on the Nov. 5 Cover of TIME magazine

The cover of the Nov. 5, 2018 edition of TIME magazine includes representatives from Baylor University Medical Center’s trauma team and a former patient. All were impacted by the July 7, 2016, shootings in downtown Dallas. The print and online interactive mural project, called “Guns in America,” includes photos and audio recordings of 245 people from across the United States.

The cover, story and interactive online project was revealed by TIME’s editor in chief, Edward Felsenthal, and the photographer and artist who created the mural, JR, on CBS This MorningSee the video. The Baylor University Medical Center team is highlighted in images throughout the six-minute TV segment, and JR speaks specifically about Michael Foreman, MD. Baylor University Medical Center’s featured team members and former patient include:
